Football on TV 2013-14

Few changes to football on TV options for the new season:

Negatives:
– Sadly the ESPN Goals app is no more. Well, it still exists but you won’t be able to watch free Premier League highlights as been the case the last few seasons. It’s been replaced by a couple of pay options from the Sun (£2 a week for access to the app), or the Times, if you don’t want to give the Sun your money. However for £2 a week it looks like all you get from the Times is web access, and you have to pay £4 a week for access to their mobile app. Though potentially the web package could work on a phone. But the £2 will give you access to the full website and the £4 will give you the tablet edition of the paper. While £6 will give you it all plus the physical paper.

Positives:
– BT Sport: It’s been hard to miss the ads. They have broken Sky Sports’ dominance with a selection of Premiership, Scottish and FA Cup matches, as well as matches from other leagues and sports. Free to BT Broadband customers. One benefit of Rangers’ current league status is that this will include an Airdrieonians (yeo!) match next Friday.

– To challenge this Sky Sports is free today only on Freeview etc channel Pick TV. Includes Swansea v. Man Utd later on.

– Another initiative from Sky available for the last few months has been Sky Sports on demand via their Netflix competitor Now TV. It’s £9.99 for 24 hour streaming access to all 6 Sky Sports channels. Potentially useful for the odd NI match.

– And MOTD (along with MOTD2 which has been for a while) is finally available on iPlayer. Sadly only from midnight on Monday evening – would have been perfect if it started 24 hours earlier for those with a day off on Mondays! Midweek MOTDs will be available from midnight on the day after they air.

Oh, and real football will still be available live and in real life at your local (rebranded) ‘NI Football League‘ ground! Up the Stute!
